Orakei Marae
On Tuesday 19th June we went to Orakei Marae. When we arrived at the marae we waited under the gatehouse. We waited and waited and some people were climbing on chairs to see what was happening. Finally we were called on to the Marae.

We did some fun activities and our favourite one was flax weaving. We made a fish and it was quite hard and some of ours were a bit wonky but we didn’t mind. Ms Derhamy did a perfect fish and Vicky’s one ended up as a bird!!!

Our first activity was with Ms Crowther. She told us the history of the Marae from a long time ago. After that Ms. Crowther let us touch the carvings but not the weavings because they were made out of flax and flax is fragile. The carvings felt rough under our fingers because the wood they carve it out of had been in the fire.
In the Wharenui we did art with Ms Linn. Most people did their own patterns or carvings. The rest copied the patterns and carvings from around the room. The patterns and carvings told stories. The colours we were allowed to use were black, red, white and a colour of our choice. Chelsea and Vicky chose gold Amanda.Z chose blue and Alfie chose orange for their colour of choice.
