Week 8

This is me in front of my house

On Monday we had a fun day doing art. We started off by closely observing and discussing Robin White’s print ‘Me at Kaitangata’. We noticed that the house was far away and small and Robin was standing close and was big. This is called perspective. We thought the house might be a batch because it looked like a small house. We noticed she only had grass in her garden and that there was smoke coming out of the chimney.

Then we got to make a mixed media self portrait of ourselves standing in front of a house that is special to us. Mixed media is when you use colouring pencils, crayons, collage, bits of newspaper. We will photograph some of our self-portraits next week and post them for you to view.

Philosophy = Love of Wisdom

“Philosphy is thinking about big questions” – Amanda F
“and asking big questions” – Krystyna
“Big questions like why am I me?” – Georgia T
“What is time?” – Vicky
“Is the tooth fairy real?” – Amanda Z
“What is real and what is not real?” – Ms Derhamy

Before we could have philosophical discussions and become philosophers we first had to agree on how to have a discussion.

" We first need a subject to talk about." - Isaiah

We decided that to have a good discussion we needed to take turns talking and manage sharing our ideas.

" It is hard to share ideas if we all talk at once." - Charlie

How do you feel if people are talking and not paying attention to you when you are sharing your ideas? - Ms Derhamy

"I feel like I dont want to share if people are talking." - Alexei
"I feel dissapointed." - Towha
"I feel angry." - Sanmith

All aboard our yellow submarine

On Friday we exhibited our submarine projects. We thought about whose was the most creative, the most true to design, most outrageous, and most adapted to purpose. We could not agree on whose was the most creative because we were all so creative. Miss Derhamy thinks that Chelsea, Sam, Amanda Z, Georgia H, Katie, Amanda F all stayed true to their design.

Most outrageous was Georgia H’s and the Titanic Team of Krystyna, Vicky and Sahra.

Lots of people, including Melvyn, adapted theirs as they built them to better fit the purpose of diving into the deep ocean.

Ms Derhamy believes that Isaiah's submarine design was adapted the most.

Ms Derhamy was impressed by the amount of mess we made while making the projects but mostly she was impressed by our creativity.
